          Description
Derived from popular European gamesof chance, the spinningofa dreidel (Yiddish for spinning top) isone of the favorite gamesplayed by childrenduring Hanukkah. The four letters inscribed on the dreidel, one oneach side, forman acronymofthe phrase A great miracle occurred here, alluding to the miracle of the Maccabees victory over Antiochuss army and the reconsecration of the Temple in Jerusalem(celebratedonHanukkah).Although made in the Bezalel School, this spinning top wascreated for the Diaspora and therefore features the lettershin(forsham, there) rather thanpeh(forpo here).

The original item is in the Alan and Riva Slifka Collection in the Israel Museum.
